Overview
Auto ShutDown (ASD) shuts your PC down at a pre-determined time. There are
two main functions of ASD, firstly to reduce electricity consumption
secondly to allow the user to leave the PC to finish a task, and not have to
return just to switch the PC off.
Reducing electricity consumption
There are millions if not billions of computers around the world. People use
computers at work, some at home and others both at home and at work. From
time to time every one has forgotten to switch their PC off. If it is a
computer at work, we are less conscious since it is not our own computer and
electricity. When it is a PC at home we are more wary, and try to off the
machine once we have finished using it.
A single PC, does not consume a huge quantity of electricity by itself, but
multiply this consumption with all the PCs left switched on in any one
organisation, then the cost soon starts to increase. Now consider how many
PCs are left switched on every night, the amount of electricity consumed is
phenomenal.
ASD can prevent such accidents occurring, by switching off computers at a
specified time, say 18:00hrs every day.
The environment
Since ASD helps reduce electricity consumption, it greatly helps the
environment. The combined wasted electricity can save the destruction of
huge forests around the world.
Enforcing shutdowns
ASD runs transparently in the background, the only visible difference is a
new icon is added to the task tray. To modify ASD properties this icon must
be double clicked with the left mouse button.
To prevent users from terminating the application and preventing shutdowns
occurring, a password can be requested before any settings can be modified.
There are two type of shutdown ASD supports. A normal shutdown checks if all
documents have been saved, and prompts the user to save before closing the
application. The second forces the PC to shutdown, this is required if
arbitrary users can log into a computer and not save all their work, hence
preventing a shutdown.
Shutdown zones
A new feature to ASD are shutdown zones. This allows the administrator to
control the shutdown time for classes from a single file.
In previous versions of ASD, if the administrator wanted all the PCs in
"room A" to shutdown at 18:00, then this time must be entered in each
version of ASD on every PC in that room. Now the shutdown time can be
retrieved from a single file, allowing the administrator to easily control
and modify the time class rooms of PCs are to shutdown by simply changing
the time in a single file once.
ASD is the most advanced shutdown utility available on the market today,
supporting unique functions. All of which are geared to decrease wasting
electricity.

Schools, Colleges and Universities
These institutions can benefit greatly from ASD, since they have hundreds of
PCs each. Most cut the electricity from the mains supply if they want to all
the computers switched off at night. This can lead to problems with the
software, which was running since it was unable to close down safety, and
save its settings.
Using the enforcement shutdown features ASD can ensure all the computers
will be shutdown at the specified time. Preventing students form using the
computers when they are not supposed to.
